The Angel Academy of Art, one of Florence’s leading institutes for teaching realist art in the tradition of the Great Masters, will open its doors to the public from May 26 to 28 with an exhibition of works created by students over recent years.
The show will shine a spotlight on works by students from Germany, Bulgaria, Austria, Finland, China, the Philippines, Australia, Mexico and Hawaii, who all came to Florence for a three-year programme at the Angel Academy of Art. The exhibition features works by alumni and faculty members from diverse backgrounds, yet who all share a commitment to the study method inherited from artist Pietro Annigoni (1910-88) and the Renaissance masters. Still life, portrait and human figure works will be on display, as well as drawings and paintings of cast models completed at different stages in the academy’s drawing and painting program.

The Angel Academy of Art remains one of the most important academies between Europe and North America to teach figurative painting methods. It was founded in 1997 by Lynne Barton and Michael John Angel, an internationally renowned artist whose paintings and portraits are exhibited in public and private collections throughout the USA and the world. Born in England in 1946, Angel moved first to Canada, then permanently to Italy, and in the late 1960s he was a pupil of Pietro Annigoni, when the latter was engaged in producing portraits of the Shah of Persia, Farah Diba and the second portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery in London.

The artists featured in the exhibition are Adam Maguire, Aiko Narissara Yeung, Alejandra Calatayud, Cameron Copley-Heissig, Cameron Hughes, Chris Arnol, Ding Bei, Dylan Frusher, Elin Nguyen, Guanghui Hou, Ibrahim Al Harbi, Jered Woznicki, Joseph Swanek, Juri Renko, Kaylie Marceca, Kirk Liu , Krasimir Marinov, Maanyaa Hathiwala, Malia Barreras-Float, Mansueta D’Souza, Mei Mei Zhou, Paul Farquharson, Petar Kovachev, Robert Bazi, Saiqun Liu, Salvatore Fichera, Sam Walker , Samuel Hegetschweiler, Shaoli Huang, Stanley Szewczyk, Stephanie Honrado, Terje Eriksen, Valerio Testa, Venkat Subramanian, Xianbo Wei, Xiao Jun Lin and Yushan Zhu.
The exhibition is free in via Nardo di Cione 10 and will observe the following opening hours: May 26, 6.30-8.30pm; May 27, 10am-5pm; May 28, 10am to 2pm.
